How to Book
We're based in McHenry, about 4 miles from Wonder Lake, so a measure-and-quote visit doesn't mean a long wait on the calendar. Call and tell us the rough age of your house - if it's one of the many built around 1968, we already have a good idea what we're walking into before we show up. We'll bring a tape measure, check your existing header and track clearance, and give you options rather than a single size that "should" fit. Because this is a install job, not a repair call, we schedule a site visit first; most of the houses here were not built with modern double-car door openings in mind, and guessing a width over the phone leads to a bad fit. If your opener or track is from that same era, we'll flag what has to go versus what might survive the swap, so you're not paying to replace parts that still work fine.)
What You Pay
We don't post a number here because Wonder Lake's housing stock varies the price more than most towns in our area. A single door swap on a 1968-era one-car opening runs differently than reinforcing an undersized header for a wider panel, or rebuilding track clearance where a drop ceiling or low garage roof pitch was never meant to clear today's standard door heights. Median household income in this pocket runs lower than the broader McHenry-area figure, and we've found most owners here want a straightforward door that matches what's already there rather than a full structural rework. We'll give you a written number after we've seen the opening in person - not a phone estimate, not a range pulled from a different town's jobs.
Doing It Yourself
A kit door from a box store is built to a generic opening. If your garage dates to the late 1960s like a lot of homes around here, your rough opening, header height, and track clearance were set by whatever builder was framing in that era - not by current door manufacturer specs. We've seen owners get a door home, find it's a half-inch too tall for the header clearance, and either force a bad fit or eat a restocking fee. If you've got a later addition or a garage that's already been reframed to modern dimensions, DIY is more realistic. Measure twice before you buy, and measure the header opening, not just the door panel you're replacing.
Parts We Carry
We stock standard-width torsion springs, steel rollers, and track sections sized for the one-car and narrow two-car openings common in houses from the 1960s and 70s. What we don't keep on the truck is anything custom-width or a panel style that was discontinued decades ago - if your current door is an odd original size, we'll order the replacement rather than promise same-day. Given this area sits in a cold-winter climate zone, we also carry heavier-gauge insulated panels and cold-rated opener units rather than the lighter stock meant for milder regions; a door that works fine in a warm-climate build can bind or lose r-value fast once temperatures drop hard here.
